Choosing the "Right Energy Replacement" while Running

It’s important for runners to choose their workout snacks carefully because:

  • Running dehydrates the body quickly through sweating and breathing.
  • Running is bouncy, which contributes to increase activity in the gut - pooh :-(

The best food will digest and absorb quickly instead of sloshing around in the stomach and gut. Sports nutrition products are easy to carry, but they are highly processed and can often lead to an overload in the gut, causing dehydration, bloating and discomfort.

If the product has a lengthy digestion time, it may lead some runners on a search for a "pooh" place. If the runner is not able to get enough water to wash down bars and gels, this may also lead to gut distress.

A 100-calorie energy bar requires 20 ounces of water to properly dilute for digestion. So be careful on the product that you choose to replace your glycogen along the route.

Samples are provided at the water stations. Take advantage and "experiment" while you are in training so that you can avoid some pooh pooing during your important events.
